KNOW BEFORE YOU GO
Dealing with public departments can sometimes be stressful. Knowing your rights is your first line of defense against extortionate demands:
- Official Fees: Always demand a digital receipt or a physical printed challan for any fee requested. Government services are legally bound to provide a receipt for all official transactions.
- Citizen Charters: Most departments (like Transport/RTO, Passport offices) publish a "Citizen's Charter" online. This charter lists the exact processing time and legal fees for every document, preventing middlemen from charging arbitrary amounts.
- Anti-Corruption Helplines: Every Indian state has an Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB). You can file complaints directly if any public official demands a bribe to execute their duties.
- Digital Submissions: Where possible, use online portals (like Sarathi for driving licenses, and e-District portals for certificates). Transacting online removes direct human contact, which is where bribe extortion usually occurs.
